Bookfox Scan, for thrift stores and book sales

Sort donated books with a barcode scan

Scan each book as it comes in. The Bookfox app suggests which of your own sections it belongs in, and flags the ones we think will sell well online and earn more for your organization. It works the same way for a book sale: scan the stock before the doors open.

Keep any book you want for your shelves and send us the rest. Nothing is paid when you send the books. Your organization receives half of the profit on each book that sells, paid by Interac e-Transfer with a monthly statement. The written agreement sets out how profit and payments are worked out, and the organization FAQ answers the common questions about money.

Try it for as long as you like. If it isn’t for you, stop any time, no hard feelings.

How it works

Book donations often arrive in mixed boxes. Deciding what each title is, where it belongs and whether it would do better online takes time, and it takes knowing the market.

A quick barcode scan gives a suggested section using the shelf names you already use, and flags the books we think will sell well online and earn more for your organization.

You still choose where the book goes and whether to keep it or pass it to us.

How Bookfox Scan works, in 75 seconds

Set it up around your store

You tell us how your books are already sorted, and we set the app up to match. You choose your sections, your minimum and any books you prefer to keep.

  • Use your own sections

Tell us the shelf names your store uses, and the app will make suggestions that match them.

  • Choose your minimum

Set the lowest estimated payment on sale a book needs before the app suggests passing it to us. The estimate is based on sales history and current marketplace prices. It is not a guarantee of what a book will sell for or pay. You can change your minimum later.

  • Keep the books that suit your store

Hold back any titles you want for your own shelves. You decide which books to pass to us and which to keep.

How your team uses it

Scan each book as it arrives, then use the section suggestion to choose its next step. We help with setup, and your team can ask questions through the Help page in the dashboard.

  • No account needed for staff

Staff join by scanning your store code, which you print once. There is no separate account and no second password.

  • Scan while sorting

Scanning runs on an ordinary iPhone or Android phone, so anyone sorting books can pick one up and scan it.

  • The same section for every book

The section suggestion shows on screen, so everyone who scans shelves the same book the same way.

See every book and every payment

We decide which books go on sale when we sort them. A book with no resale market (for example a Reader’s Digest condensed edition, an old encyclopedia, a book-club reprint, or a damaged copy) is not listed and is not paid for; we recycle it or pass it on. When a book sells, your monthly statement shows what it sold for, the marketplace’s fees and postage, our handling allowance, the profit and your half.

Nothing to pay to get started

There is no subscription, no charge for collection, and no minimum you have to hit each month. We show your team how to scan and send books to us.

We collect across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Tell us where your store or book sale is and roughly how many books come through, and we’ll confirm whether we can reach you.
