For Bookfox scouts
Bookfox Perks
Bookfox Perks is a free, optional loyalty program for Bookfox scouts. You earn points for every book we buy from you, as well as for participating in our Bookfox Community in the app.
Your points and your accepted books each quarter set your tier. There are four tiers: Grey Fox, Arctic Fox, Silver Fox and Red Fox. Each one keeps everything from the tiers below it and adds more, including a bonus on the upfront price of every book we accept.
The bonus
Your tier adds 5% at Arctic Fox, 10% at Silver Fox, or 15% at Red Fox to the book's upfront price. The price shown at scan already includes that bonus. We pay that shown price only if the book meets the Scout Agreement's quote deadlines and passes inspection.
For example, take a made-up book with an upfront price of CA$10.00:
| Tier | Upfront price | Bonus | We pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grey Fox | CA$10.00 | +CA$0.00 (0%) | CA$10.00 |
| Arctic Fox | CA$10.00 | +CA$0.50 (5%) | CA$10.50 |
| Silver Fox | CA$10.00 | +CA$1.00 (10%) | CA$11.00 |
| Red Fox | CA$10.00 | +CA$1.50 (15%) | CA$11.50 |
- The bonus is the same percentage on every book we accept, whatever the book.
- The bonus is paid only on accepted books. A book we decline earns no bonus and no points.
- Your tier when you scan a book sets its bonus. A later change of tier, up or down, does not change the price shown for a book you have already scanned.
- The examples show how the percentage works. They do not promise that any book will receive a CA$10 quote, be accepted, or earn you a profit.
The four tiers
Each tier keeps everything from the tiers below it and adds the items on its card. Reach 4,500 points this quarter to move up to Silver Fox. You also need 120 accepted books in the quarter. You keep it for the rest of this quarter and all of next quarter. After that you move down at most one tier a quarter.

Support and how quickly we pay are the same for every scout, at every tier.
How tiers work
Tiers run on calendar quarters: January to March, April to June, July to September and October to December, in Vancouver time.
To reach a tier, you need both its points and its accepted books in the same calendar quarter. A book counts when Bookfox accepts it at check-in. You move up the moment you have both, and from that moment you get everything that tier includes.
- Arctic Fox: 1,500 points and 45 accepted books.
- Silver Fox: 4,500 points and 120 accepted books.
- Red Fox: 9,000 points and 255 accepted books.
A tier you reach lasts for the rest of that calendar quarter and all of the next quarter. After that, if you have not earned a higher tier, you can drop by at most one tier at the start of each later quarter. Your points start at zero each quarter. Keeping a tier does not carry points into the new quarter.
Visits, store suggestions and store updates are activity points. Up to 300 activity points count toward Arctic Fox, 900 toward Silver Fox and 1,800 toward Red Fox. Extra activity points do not count toward a tier.
Points removed for misuse are taken out as if you never earned them, so a tier reached only through them is not kept.
When you join Bookfox Perks you start at Grey Fox. Points count from the moment you join: books you scan and visits you start while you are not a member earn no points.
A book counts on the day it passes check-in. A book that you return later, or that is faulty, still counts. A second copy that earns no points does not count. A book removed for misuse does not count. Scouting visits and scans are not books.
The app shows your points and your accepted books this quarter, the days left in the quarter, and what you still need for the next tier.
An example
Sam is a made-up scout who joins Bookfox Perks in April and starts at Grey Fox.
| Quarter | Sam's points that quarter | What happens | Sam's tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| April to June | 4,500 by 20 May | Sam joins in April at Grey Fox. On 20 May Sam's points this quarter reach 4,500, and Bookfox has accepted 120 books from Sam this quarter. Sam has both, and moves up to Silver Fox that day. | Grey Fox, then Silver Fox from 20 May |
| July to September | 1,800 | Points start again at 0. Sam keeps Silver Fox for this whole quarter. Sam's points reach 1,500, Arctic Fox's number, and Sam has 45 accepted books, but not the 4,500 points and 120 books of Silver Fox. | Silver Fox |
| October to December | 750 | Silver Fox's period is over and Sam did not reach it again. The tier Sam reached in July to September is Arctic Fox, so Sam starts this quarter at Arctic Fox. Sam's points reach no new tier. | Arctic Fox |
| January to March | Starts at 0 | Arctic Fox's period is over and Sam reached no tier in October to December. After a kept period Sam moves down at most one tier a quarter, and one tier below Arctic Fox is Grey Fox. Sam moves up again the moment Sam has the points and the accepted books of a tier in the same quarter. | Grey Fox |
How points work
Points come from books we accept and from taking part in Bookfox Community: a checked-in scouting visit to a thrift store listed in the Bookfox app earns points too. Points have no cash value: they set your tier together with your accepted books, and your tier sets your bonus.
- Each accepted book10 to 200 base pointsYour tier may add more points. The app shows an estimate when you scan. We add the final whole-number points when we accept the book at check-in.
- A scouting visit20 activity pointsA scouting visit is a check-in at a thrift store listed in the Bookfox app where you scan 50 different books before you check out. At most two visits earn points in one day, and at most 14 in one week.
- A store suggestion50 activity pointsSuggest a store through the app and check in there. If we add it and it sells books, you earn the points once for that store. At most 100 points in a week and 250 in a quarter.
- Visits, store suggestions and store updates are activity points. Up to 300 activity points count toward Arctic Fox, 900 toward Silver Fox and 1,800 toward Red Fox. Extra activity points do not count toward a tier.
- Grey Fox gets base points. For each book we accept, Arctic Fox gets 1.1 times its base points, Silver Fox gets 1.2 times, and Red Fox gets 1.3 times. We round each book's result to a whole point. A half point rounds up.
- Points earned from an accepted book stay in that quarter unless we remove them for misuse. A later return or fault does not remove them. Points start at zero in a new quarter.
- Perks is optional. You choose whether, when, where and how to scout. We do not set hours, routes or a minimum number of books. You buy books for resale at your own risk. Points and tiers do not guarantee any income.
- Your points this quarter, your tier and your recent points are on your Profile in the app.
Double Points Day
At Silver Fox and Red Fox, you can choose a Double Points Day in the app. Eligible scouting-visit points on that date are doubled, subject to the visit and activity limits. Book points do not double.
Pick a date in the next 7 days. After you pick, you can pick again in 7 days.
The Red Fox scanner
When you first reach Red Fox, with its points and its books, Bookfox may give you one barcode scanner to keep, if this benefit is active and a scanner is available.
The gift notice names the scanner model and its documented value. Keep the gift notice with your records.
Bookfox gives one scanner for reaching Red Fox. If you reach Red Fox again later, you do not get a second scanner. The scanner stays yours if your tier changes later.
The scanner is a gift. You do not buy it with points. It is not payment for books and it is not part of the upfront price of any book. Bookfox never lowers the upfront price of a book to pay for it.
Bookfox Community
Joining Bookfox Perks opens Bookfox Community: the shared list of stores in the Bookfox app for your area, and when other members plan to visit them or have visited. Other members never see your name, and a visit shows about 60 minutes after it happens.
Community is for members. Until you join, the Community screen in the app shows no stores, only the card to join.
Bookfox Perks terms
Bookfox Perks is a free, optional points program for Bookfox scouts. Every book we accept from you earns points. Your points and your accepted books set your tier, and each tier adds something new while keeping everything from the tiers below it. When you join, Record my shop visits is on unless you turned it off before, so your shop visits are recorded for points and store statuses (see "Your location and shop visits").
Words used in these terms
- Scout: a person who buys books and offers them to Bookfox for resale.
- Accepted book: a book Bookfox buys after check-in and inspection.
- Tier: your place in Bookfox Perks: Grey Fox, Arctic Fox, Silver Fox or Red Fox.
- Calendar quarter: January to March, April to June, July to September or October to December, using Vancouver time.
- Upfront price: the amount the app offers for a book before a tier bonus.
- Activity points: points from scouting visits, store suggestions and store updates.
What each tier gives you
- Grey Fox, yours the day you join: your tier badge, Bookfox Community, and points on every book we accept from you.
- Arctic Fox: a 5% bonus on the upfront price of every book we accept, 1.1 times the base points on every accepted book, and recognition in the app (your tier's fox on your Profile, and a moment in the app when you move up). Arctic Fox gets early access when we offer a new app feature to that tier.
- Silver Fox: a 10% bonus, 1.2 times the base points on every accepted book, and Double Points Day.
- Red Fox: a 15% bonus and 1.3 times the base points on every accepted book, and, when the benefit is active, a Bookfox barcode scanner to keep, given once (see "The Red Fox scanner"). Red Fox scouts are invited first to beta test new app features and to help shape the direction of the Bookfox app.
- Grey Fox: CA$10.00 + CA$0.00 = CA$10.00
- Arctic Fox: CA$10.00 + CA$0.50 (5%) = CA$10.50
- Silver Fox: CA$10.00 + CA$1.00 (10%) = CA$11.00
- Red Fox: CA$10.00 + CA$1.50 (15%) = CA$11.50
The examples show how the percentage works. They do not promise that any book will receive a CA$10 quote, be accepted, or earn you a profit.
Your tier when you scan a book sets its bonus. A later change of tier, up or down, does not change the price shown for a book you have already scanned.
How you earn points
- Accepted books. Each book Bookfox accepts earns 10 to 200 base points. Your tier may add more points. The app shows an estimate when you scan. We add the final whole-number points when we accept the book at check-in. A book we decline earns no points.
- Your tier's points boost. Grey Fox gets base points. For each book we accept, Arctic Fox gets 1.1 times its base points, Silver Fox gets 1.2 times, and Red Fox gets 1.3 times. We round each book's result to a whole point. A half point rounds up.
- Points stay. Points earned from an accepted book stay in that quarter unless we remove them for misuse. A later return or fault does not remove them. Points start at zero in a new quarter. If we change how points are counted, points already earned in the current quarter remain credited and we will show you the updated total.
- Scouting visits. A scouting visit is a check-in at a thrift store listed in the Bookfox app where you scan 50 different books before you check out. It earns 20 activity points. At most two visits earn points in one day, for up to 40 points. At most 14 visits earn points in one week, for up to 280 points. A visit without check-in earns no visit points. Double Points Day raises these limits on its date and in its week (see Double Points Day).
- Store suggestions. Suggest a store through the app and check in there. If we add it and it sells books, you earn 50 activity points once for that store. A suggestion we do not add, or a store without books, earns no points. Store suggestions can earn at most 100 points in a week and 250 points in a quarter.
- Store updates. You can send an update about a store from the app during a verified check-in at that store. Photos come from the app's camera. Updates are optional. You choose whether to send them. No store, area or time earns a higher amount. At launch, a person at Bookfox decides on each update, and a person always decides on a "no books here" report. An update earns points only after we accept it.
- The first photo we accept that shows books at a store marked as not confirmed earns 20 activity points. This is paid once for each store, across all scouts.
- The first photo we accept of a book price sign at a store earns 10 activity points. This is paid once for each store, across all scouts.
- An hours update that we accept earns 10 activity points if the store has no hours in the app, or if its hours were last checked more than 6 months ago. This is paid at most once for each store in any 6 months, across all scouts.
- Store updates can earn at most 60 points in a week and 150 points in a quarter. The app shows points on an update only when that update can earn them at that time. This does not hold the points for you. If a limit is reached before we decide, or if we accept another scout's update first, your update earns no points. The app shows you the amount paid after we decide.
- A "no books here" report earns no store update points. A receipt that shows you bought books at a store also earns no store update points. Accepted books earn points under their own rules.
- Activity points and tiers. Visits, store suggestions and store updates are activity points. Up to 300 activity points count toward Arctic Fox, 900 toward Silver Fox and 1,800 toward Red Fox. Extra activity points do not count toward a tier.
How tiers work
Tiers run on calendar quarters.
To reach a tier, you need both its points and its accepted books in the same calendar quarter: Arctic Fox needs 1,500 points and 45 books; Silver Fox needs 4,500 points and 120 books; Red Fox needs 9,000 points and 255 books. A book counts when Bookfox accepts it at check-in. You move up the moment you have both, and from that moment you get everything that tier includes.
A tier you reach lasts for the rest of that calendar quarter and all of the next quarter. After that, if you have not earned a higher tier, you can drop by at most one tier at the start of each later quarter. Your points start at zero each quarter. Keeping a tier does not carry points into the new quarter.
For example, reach Red Fox in February: you are Red Fox until 30 June. If you reach no tier after that, you are Silver Fox from 1 July, Arctic Fox from 1 October and Grey Fox from 1 January.
Points removed for misuse are taken out as if you never earned them, so a tier reached only through them is not kept.
When you join Bookfox Perks you start at Grey Fox. Points count from the moment you join: books you scan and visits you start while you are not a member earn no points.
The app shows your points and your accepted books this quarter, the days left in the quarter, and what you still need for the next tier.
Double Points Day
At Silver Fox and Red Fox, you can choose a Double Points Day in the app. Eligible scouting-visit points on that date are doubled, subject to the visit and activity limits. Book points do not double. On that date the two visits that earn points can earn up to 80 points, and the visit limit for that week rises by 40 points.
Pick a date in the next 7 days. After you pick, you can pick again in 7 days. The app keeps a record of each date you pick and when you picked it.
The Red Fox scanner
When you first reach Red Fox, with its points and its books, Bookfox may give you one barcode scanner to keep, if this benefit is active and a scanner is available.
- You have a loan scanner. If you have a loan scanner from Bookfox when you reach Red Fox, that scanner becomes yours. The loan ends. You do not return it.
- You have no loan scanner. If you have no loan scanner, or you returned yours, Bookfox gives you a new scanner.
- An amount for a lost loan scanner. If you owe Bookfox an amount for a lost loan scanner, you pay that amount first. Then Bookfox gives you the scanner. The scanner does not change the amount.
- Once only. Bookfox gives one scanner for reaching Red Fox. If you reach Red Fox again later, you do not get a second scanner.
- It stays yours. The scanner stays yours if your tier changes later.
- The model. Bookfox chooses the scanner model. A new scanner can be a different model from a loan scanner.
- The model and the value. The gift notice names the scanner model and its documented value. Keep the gift notice with your records.
- Warranty. Bookfox gives no warranty for the scanner. The maker's own warranty, if there is one, is the only warranty.
- How you use it. Once the scanner is yours, you decide how to use it. Bookfox puts no condition on its use and does not ask you to return it.
- Not part of a price. The scanner is a gift. You do not buy it with points. It is not payment for books and it is not part of the upfront price of any book. Bookfox never lowers the upfront price of a book to pay for it.
- When you get it. First, Bookfox checks that your points and your accepted books are clear of the Fair play clause. Then Bookfox tells you in the app and by email that the scanner is yours, and arranges with you how it gets to you. The scanner becomes yours on the date of that notice.
Bookfox Community
Joining Bookfox Perks opens Bookfox Community: the shared list of stores in the Bookfox app for your area, and when other members plan to visit them or have visited. Other members never see your name, and a visit shows about 60 minutes after it happens. Until you join, the Community screen shows no stores, only the card to join.
- Store visit plans. You can say you plan to visit a store today or tomorrow, in the morning, afternoon or evening.
- Store statuses. Whether a scout is due at a store, and whether it was visited today. Visited statuses show while Record my shop visits is on for you.
- Visit plans show as pending. When a member, or you, has a plan for a store, the store shows a blue ring on the map and in the list. The store also shows the part of the day of the visit. Other members do not see whose plan it is. You can have 3 plans at the same time.
- Suggesting a store. When you are at a store that is not in the Bookfox app, you can suggest it. The points for a suggestion are set out under "How you earn points".
- Stores not confirmed. Some stores in the app show the note "We haven't confirmed that this store sells books." You choose whether to visit them. A store comes off the map if a scout with a verified check-in reports that it has no books and we agree.
- The rescan note. When you scan a book that a member scanned at the same store in the last 30 days, the app tells you when the last scan at that store occurred: this morning, this afternoon or this evening; yesterday morning, yesterday afternoon or yesterday evening; or, from 2 days ago, the number of days. Morning ends at noon and afternoon at 5 pm, Vancouver time. The note does not show who scanned the book. The note needs a connection and an open store visit.
The rules
- Perks is optional. You choose whether, when, where and how to scout. We do not set hours, routes or a minimum number of books. You buy books for resale at your own risk. Points and tiers do not guarantee any income.
- Joining and leaving. You can join in the app at any time. You can leave at any time by opening a support ticket, or on the screen that shows new terms. Joining or leaving never changes the upfront price we offer for a book, our support, or how quickly we pay. We never tell you where or when to go, and no store or area earns extra points.
- Points have no cash value. Points cannot be cashed in, exchanged for credit, or transferred to anyone. The Red Fox scanner is a gift of goods and is not paid for with points.
- What counts as a book. A book counts on the day it passes check-in. A book that you return later, or that is faulty, still counts. A second copy that earns no points does not count. A book removed for misuse does not count. Scouting visits and scans are not books.
- The bonus is paid only on accepted books. A book we decline earns no bonus and no points. The bonus is part of the price of the book and appears on your invoice with it.
- The same support and payout speed at every tier. Your tier never changes how we help you or how quickly we pay.
- Misuse. Misuse, such as faked scans or faked check-ins, can lead to the removal of points, the loss of features, or the closure of your account.
- Plans. A plan is not a promise.
Changes to Perks
Bookfox may change these Perks terms at any time. We will show you the new terms in the Bookfox app and ask you to tap Accept before you make your next scan. The new terms apply to you when you tap Accept. If you do not accept, you cannot make another scan under Perks. If you do not accept, you can still deliver and be paid for books already quoted. You can leave Perks on that screen, or at any time by opening a support ticket. You can close your account at any time by opening a support ticket.
A change does not take away points or a tier you already earned for its stated period. Points still start at zero each new calendar quarter. A change does not alter the price shown for a book you scanned in the seven days before the new terms appeared in the app, while that price is still valid under the Scout Agreement. To keep that price, submit the book within seven days of scanning it and deliver the batch within seven days of submission. The book must pass inspection. The Scout Agreement's rule for an obviously wrong quote still applies.
Your location and shop visits
- By joining Perks and sharing your phone's location when you check in, you agree that your shop visits are recorded to award points and to show store statuses. Record my shop visits is on when you join, unless you turned it off before.
- When you check in, the app uses your phone's location to check that you are at the store. We record the store and visit time to award points, show an unnamed visit status to other Perks members, and check for misuse. We do not keep the location itself.
- Scans made during a visit are linked to that store.
- Store photos. Take photos of books and signs only. Keep people, license plates, screens and receipts out of the frame. Follow the store's rules on photography. We reject a photo that shows someone who can be identified. We do not show your photos to other scouts or to the public.
- When you post a plan, other members see that a scout is due at that store in that part of the day. Other members do not see your name, but someone who knows your plans may guess that a visit was yours.
- When you suggest a store, the app sends your phone's location as the store's location, and we record that you suggested it.
- You can turn off "Record my shop visits" in Settings. With it off, visits earn no points and do not appear in store statuses; accepted books can still earn points.
- See our Privacy Policy for exactly what we keep and when we delete it.
What is kept
- A record that you joined, each version of these terms you accepted and when, and when you leave.
- Your store updates, kept with your account so that we can show you the result. An automated service checks each photo when you send it. We delete a rejected photo after 30 days. When you delete your account, we delete your store updates and their photos, unless the law requires us to keep them.
- Your plans, which are deleted about a day after the part of the day they were for has ended. A record of whether each plan was kept is deleted within 90 days.
- Your shop visits, which are kept for 90 days, then deleted. Your points record keeps the date and the points of each scouting visit, without the store.
- The books that you scan during a visit to a store or a book sale are kept with that store or sale. After 90 days, we remove your name and the time from them and keep only the book, the store or sale, and the date. When you scan a book outside a store or a sale, we keep no location of any kind with the scan.
Leaving
- You can leave at any time by opening a support ticket.
- Leaving ends your Community access. Your open plans are deleted at once and your visits stop counting toward any store status.
- If you leave Perks, you lose all Perks benefits at once: from your next scan, books carry no tier bonus and earn no points, and you no longer hold a tier. You can rejoin later. Points from earlier quarters do not return.
