For charities, community organizations and volunteer groups

Turn unwanted books into funding for your organization

Every community has more books than it knows what to do with. Most ways of raising money take an application, a campaign, or staff time that has to come from somewhere. This one takes a shelf: your supporters bring in books they no longer want, we collect them free, and you get a share of every one that sells.

How it works

The only task that sits with your organization is booking the collection.

1

Tell people you take books

We supply the boxes, the identification stickers and all the promotional material: posters, signage for your premises, and wording for a newsletter or a social post, all of it telling people which books are most worth bringing. We list you on our website too, so people looking for somewhere to take their books are pointed to you. The more people who know, the more you raise.

2

Your community brings them in

Books go into the boxes we supply, or stay in whatever they arrived in. Nothing needs sorting, pricing, repacking or recording.

3

Book a collection from ten boxes

Once you have ten boxes or more, choose a collection date from those available. It is free, we do the lifting, and we leave empty boxes behind.

4

You receive a share of every sale

We sort, price, list and sell. Each month you get a statement showing which books sold and what each one earned.

Who does what

Your organization

  • Let your supporters know you take books
  • Fill the boxes we provide
  • Book a collection when you reach ten boxes
  • Receive monthly payments for sold books

Bookfox

  • Supply the boxes, the stickers and all the promotional material
  • List you on our website as a donation partner
  • Collect free, on a date you choose
  • Sort and grade every book that comes in
  • Research and price each one individually
  • Photograph, list and sell them
  • Deal with buyers, postage and returns
  • Find a home for anything without a resale market
  • Send you a statement and payment every month

There is no fee, no subscription, and no charge for collection. Nothing on our side of that list is billed back to you.

What you get paid

You get a share of the money each book actually sells for, paid monthly. The statement shows every book that sold, what it sold for, and what your share of it came to, book by book.

We agree the rate with you before you start.

What else it does for you

More people through your door

Every donation is somebody walking in, often for the first time. It gives people another reason to visit you.

An easier ask than money

Asking people for books they no longer want is a far easier conversation than asking for a donation, and almost everybody has some.

Fewer books thrown away

Books are heavy and awkward to recycle, and plenty of what gets thrown out is still perfectly readable. Yours get sold on or recycled instead.

Books stay in circulation

Every book we sell goes to somebody who chose it, usually for a fraction of the new price. Your donations keep good books in use and keep reading affordable.

A good thing to be seen doing

Taking books in shows you support reading, recycling, and your own cause all at once. It is an easy thing to put your name to.

A real number for your annual report

We tell you how many books came through you and what happened to them, so there is a real figure to put in front of your board, your members or a funder.

Questions we get asked

How much space does this need?

Ten boxes is the minimum for a collection, and our boxes are 19 by 13 inches and stack five high, so that is two stacks and a little under three and a half square feet of floor. Keep more than that if you have the room. There is no upper limit and no schedule, so you book a collection whenever it suits you.

What kinds of books do you take?

All of them. The materials we supply tell your supporters which books are most worth bringing in, so you get more of what sells and less of what does not, but nothing is ever turned away and nobody has to check.

What do our staff and volunteers have to do?

Put the books into the boxes as they are handed in. There is nothing to record, no form to complete, and nothing to look up.

How do collections work?

Once you reach ten boxes you book a collection online and choose from the dates available in your area. There is no fixed schedule to keep and no charge, and we leave empty boxes with you when we take the full ones.

What if we don't fill ten boxes?

Ten boxes is the minimum for a collection. If you have fewer, you can bring them to our Surrey location instead. Drop-offs are by appointment, booked through the website.

What happens to books that don't sell?

Not every book has a resale market, and we are straightforward about that. Those are sold in bulk lots or recycled wherever possible. Either way they do not come back to you.

How and when are we paid?

Every month, and what you receive is a share of the proceeds of each book that sells. Payment follows the sale, so books that sell long after collection still earn for you. The statement lists every book individually, showing what it sold for and what your share of it comes to.

Can we keep some books ourselves?

They were donated to you, so of course you can. If something comes in that you would rather keep or sell yourself, keep it. We take whatever you pass on.

Can our donors claim a tax receipt?

That is your decision, under whatever policy you already use for donated goods. Bookfox is not a registered charity and issues no receipts of its own.

What if it isn't right for us?

Let us know and we will collect whatever is there. There is no notice period, no minimum term, and nothing to pay back.

Getting started

Tell us where you are and we will arrange a visit. There is nothing to sign at that stage, and no cost either way.

Already selling books yourself?

We also offer a program for organizations that already handle used books. Your team scans them as they come in, we buy the ones worth real money and pay on collection, and you keep everything we don't take. See how that one works.
